The Man Behind the Microphone
2017 • 1′ 26″
A documentary feature about Tunisian superstar Hedi Jouini.
It’s the intensely personal story of South Londoner Claire Belhassine discovering the legacy of her Grandfather, a legendary Tunisian singer-songwriter whose work is known throughout the Arab world. It looks at the man, his life, his legacy, and the lives of his wife, children and grandchildren. Shot across three continents, it explores the nature of diaspora and growing up with dual heritage.
I worked with Claire on this film over a period of three years, during which I produced shoots in Tunis, Paris and London. The film premiered at IDFA, was in official selection at DOK.fest München, Dubai IFF, was broadcast on France Ô, and received a streaming release on MUBI.
